Book Description
for Dear Acorn (Love, Oak) by Joyce Sidman and Melissa Sweet
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Eight pairs of poems, written as letters from one inanimate object to another, comprise this delightful book of poetry. The engaging epistolary format invites readers to celebrate each object as well as their relationship to one another. Crisp textual imagery and stunning artwork bring each poem to life. For example, in “Sky/Bubble,” a newly formed Bubble utters, “O Sky, as I float up and up / in your dazzling air—so blue— / how I long to / be / part / of you / POP!” In response, Sky says that while it holds many things, it rarely experiences the sensation of being held, and it reciprocates, “So, Bubble: / Thanks for that / brief, brilliant hug, / that soapy / kiss.” The distinctive voices of the letter writers are perfectly paired with bright and whimsical collage illustrations.
