Book Descriptions
for Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman and Brett Helquist
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
Odd and the Frost Giants introduces three major gods of Norse Mythol ogy—Odin, Thor, and Loki—and a twelve-year-old boy named Odd. In Gaiman’s signature chatty style, readers learn that Odd is a lucky name, but the boy Odd is not so lucky. His father has died, and Odd has crushed his leg and foot and is crippled. As in the best folktales, Odd escapes his cruel stepfather and meets the three gods who are trapped in animal form. How Odd tricks the Frost Giant and releases his companions from their animal prisons makes for a rousing introduction to Norse storytelling. 2010 USBBY
