Book Descriptions
for Becca at Sea by Dierdre Baker
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
Beginning in February and ending in late summer, this episodic story chronicles young Becca’s visits to her grandmother’s home on a remote island off the coast of British Columbia. While Becca’s parents remain on the mainland preparing for a new baby, Becca copes with her eccentric, adventurous grandmother and helps host a stream of wildly diverse visiting relatives and friends. She gardens, learns to handle various kinds of boats, minds a baby seal, and eventually finds a friend all her own. The sharply drawn characters and vividly realized setting evoke a place where life follows the change of seasons and rhythms of the sea.
