Book Description
for My Flawless Life by Yvonne Woon
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Hana Yang Lerner (Chinese American/white) is the “fixer” at her elite Washington, D.C., high school. Her wealthy classmates hire her to make their problems disappear and ensure their secrets remain private. Managing other people’s lives provides Hana some measure of control now that her own life and reputation are beyond repair: Her senator father was involved in a hit-and-run that severely injured a pedestrian and caused total upheaval to her family and their living situation. When Hana is “hired” by an anonymous client, “Three,” who asks Hana to follow Hana’s ex-best friend, Luce, Hana finds herself embroiled in a mystery. She spies Luce’s boyfriend meeting secretly with a boy who could be his twin, and soon her investigation leads her to an education nonprofit that turns out to be a front for a much shadier operation. Meanwhile, as the story progresses, layers of deception, denial, and pain are revealed within Hana’s own family and past, including the reason for her falling-out with Luce. While at first glance this mystery offers the thrills of political intrigue and crime, it has great emotional depth as well. It will take every ounce of strength Hana has to truly fix her life, even if the task before her feels impossible. (Age 13 and older)
