Book Description
for What Do Brothas Do All Day? by Ajuan Mance
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
“What do brothas do all day?” Inspired by Richard Scarry’s What Do People Do All Day?, a jovial text gives myriad answers to the question of how Black men spend their days. Men are pictured driving a work truck, reading a book on the subway, and chatting at a bus stop. Others wait in line at the grocery store, while another gets his cut “lined up” at the barbershop. There’s plenty of joy, too, among the everyday tasks. “Brothas jump” double Dutch in the street. “Brothas sing. / Brothas rock” (with guitars) “and roll” (on a skateboard). “Brothas play …” (a saxophone) “and play …” (basketball) “and play” (video games with a friend). They enjoy conversation over coffee, listen to one another, and laugh together. And of course, brothas love. Ink and digital collage illustrations with bold lines and colors depict a joyful community of Black men of different ages, skin tones, body sizes, and personal styles. (Ages 3-8)
