Sara Palacios: Hi, this is Sara Palacios and I'm the illustrator Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match, Marisol McDonald no combina. I'm going to tell you a bit about how I came to illustrate this book and then I'll share a page spread with you.

I got this book when I was still a student at the Fine Arts University. One of my favorite teachers Edward Dominguez took us on a field trip to Children's Book Press. There we met the editor in chief, Dana Goldberg, who talked to us about the books they published. She asked to take a look at our portfolios and we left some promo material.

That summer I went back home to Mexico. I was already publishing there so I was working when I received an e-mail from Dana saying that she had a new manuscript, that she had seen my work and thought that I would be a good fit for it. She wanted to know if I was interested, which of course I was. Marisol was my first book published in the U. S. I spent a lot of time researching children's pictures before creating the character of Marisol, that was the first step in the process. Then I received feedback from Dana and Monica Brown, the author. When we found our Marisol I moved on to draw thumbnails, sketches and the final illustrations.

We were on a tight schedule. We had six months to do the book. I used mix media to create illustrations. I used wash, markers, watercolor, colored pencils, and cut paper. In this inaudible you can see the in the bad witch in the background. Elaina is my middle name and the name of the restaurant in the back. Bush was the name of the street I was living at the time.
